Search Engines

Disclaimer
Parents, Students and Educators, Please read!
I have been to all the sites listed on this page as well as on all of the Man and Mollusc's Internet Resource Section pages. Many of the search engines listed on this page are very extensive, I cannot guarantee that they do not lead to sites that are unsuitable for children. Therefor; I would advise that parents and educators monitor their children when visiting new sites for the first time. For a listing of proven "Family Friendly" Search Engines, CLICK HERE.

  1. I will not give out information like my name, address, telephone number, photograph, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without permission from my parents/guardians.

  2. I will tell my parents/guardians right away if I find information that makes me feel uncomfortable.

  3. I will not agree to meet someone I have chatted with online.

  4. I will not answer messages that are mean or rude or that make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I get a message like that I will tell my parents/guardians right away.

  5. I will talk with my parents/guardians so that we can set up rules for going online, like the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and places I can visit online.

Kid's Safe Search Engines:

  • AOL Kids: "AOL.COM is committed to providing a safe, age-appropriate environment for kids in a manner appealing to both kids and parents, addressing primary industry and consumer concerns."

Popular Search Engines:

  • AltaVista : The most flexible search-engine around! : by using "boolean" searches (like geometry, actually - a AND b, a NOT b OR c,  c NEAR b....they explain it all on the page below!), you can combine phrases with single words, and narrow down your search considerably!!

  • Ask Jeeves Results: Jeeves sorts sites into categories for you, which can be QUITE useful at times!

  • BUBL LINK: Browse by Subject:   This site is a fantastic research tool!  Has many links to all academic areas - science, the arts, engineering, education, whatever academic area you're looking for!!

  • Cantufind.com: Search in safety.  You have the choice.  Excellent site for families.

  • Disney.go.com: Not really a search engine but, a fun site and family friendly

  • Excite Searching: Excite is one of the most "user-friendly" search engines around: it helps you by a) suggesting related searches that could prove useful, and b) dividing the results into sensible categories - for example, when you look for "spam",  it neatly divides the results into the food and the internet varieties of Spam!

  • Google.com:the web organized by topic:   A recent study has identified this search engine as being the very best for science research.

  • Locate.com all-in-one search page - Web, News, People, Maps: Good place to go to find people, places, etc. in the USA - also has a variety of search engines on one site.

  • Lycos: Their "community guide" is similar to Yahoo!, and perhaps better in some areas.

  • Mamma: Mother of All Search Engines

  • MetaCrawler: Good when you want to search ALL the major search engines at the same time, but are not too concerned about "sensible" ranking systems - if you don't find what you are seeking at, say Altavista or Yahoo, then try this engine!!

  • Yahoo! Indexes: Everything is sorted by category - you just follow the categories until you come to the article you want: quite useful, especially for more "general" topics - for science and academics, BUBL LINK is more comprehensive.  HOWEVER, the non technical nature of the articles will appeal to many children, and adults who want an easily-understood, general introduction to a particular topic.

Here are some of my other favorites:

  • 37.com:  Type Once, get results from up to 37 search engines!

  • Auction Watchers and Searchers:  See list at the bottom of this page

  • Canoe.com:  For a good Canadian perspective. "CANOE/CANOË is a multilingual, international network of news and information sites that offer the best in world, national and local coverage. "

  • eWildlife.com:

  • The Good Zoo Guide Online (goodzoos.com), the essential guide to the best zoos, wildlife parks and animal collections on the planet, animals information, conservation issues and much, much more!

  • HotBot - offers users a point-and-click interface, pull down menus, and the ability to use plain English terminology for constructing searches.

  • Metacrawlers: "Unlike search engines, metacrawlers don't crawl the web themselves to build listings. Instead, they allow searches to be sent to several search engines all at once. The results are then blended together onto one page. "

  • PetSmart:  Actually, this is not a true search engine but a commercial pet product and information site but I thought it might come in as handy for you as it does me.

  • SearchEngineZ: Select Resources for Serious Searchers
  • Spider's Apprentice, The: The Spider's Apprentice, Spider’s apprentice, is not another search engine.  It doesn't crawl the Web looking for new URLs.  It can't find stuff for you...but it can help you find it yourself..” We also analyze and rate the major search engines.  If you are new to searching, do take a look at this site.  It gives a lot of good information to assist you.
