Oreo's Story Continues
August 2005

Oreohelix strigosa
(Gould, 1846): Rocky Mountain Snail
Synonyms. Helix cooperi W. G. Binney, 1858; O. strigosa canadica Berry, 1922.

August 26 , 2005

Our weather has finally cooled down. Actually it has been quite cool, almost freezing ay night! This seems to have stimulated Oreo. He is up with just short naps for about 3 days then he hibernates for only about 48 hours before awakening again.

He continues to enjoy cooked oatmeal, lettuce dandelion blossoms, dandelion greens and lichens.

Oreo's shell has grown and is now forming a slight lip at the aperture. He/she seems to eat rock and the soil under his moss bedding to obtain the calcium needed. Since I provided rocks containing calcite, he/she completely ignores the cuttlebone.

Oh the hot days this summer, Oreo was quite smart, he buried himself deep in the cool damp moss bedding instead of hibernating stuck to his home walls or rocks. He finally enjoyed having a puddle of water to stroll through when he would wake up on a hot day. Before this summers heat, he avoided water puddles and got all his water from the condensation on his case walls.

Am I unside down Or are you?
